Beatnik Radio Gives Back to the Kansas City Entrepreneurial Spirit

WRITTEN BY ALLISON WAY, SENIOR COPYWRITER & CHIEF EDITOR

The concept for Beatnik Radio came quite spontaneously.  Derek Olsen, host of the podcast, woke up one morning and decided to interview his friend and owner of Oddly Correct coffee shop.  He recorded the interview and posted it online as a podcast.  And from that moment on, he was hooked.

"I love Kansas City and I love Kansas City entrepreneurs and small business owners," says Olsen.  "I'm one myself and I know how different entrepreneurship is and how alone you can feel.  Hearing these stories helps the people who have taken the bold step of following their dreams.  It gives back to the Kansas City entrepreneurial spirit."

Beatnik Radio offers a view of the Kansas City creative business landscape by providing a platform for creative businesses to let others know what they are up to.  The weekly podcast features entrepreneurs and small business owners with interesting startup stories.  Derek digs deep into Kansas City entrepreneurial brains to expose business advice, startup motivation and encouragement.

"There's a real value in listening to someone who is going through the same struggles as you," says Olsen.  "I always start by asking the entrepreneur why he does what he does.  I always start with 'why'.  Then, I ask about what the business is, specific projects and small business advice.  Then I ask the tough questions like 'What are you afraid of?' and 'What mistakes have you made?'"

But Beatnik Radio hasn't been around forever.  In fact, this week marks Beatnik's 8th podcast.  The podcast features Herb Sih, co-founder of Think Big Partners and the bizperc coworking space.

"I have been hearing about Think Big Partners for the past year or so," said Olsen.  "Then I went to the First Friday Entrepreneur Corner and to two bizperc Open Houses.  I listened to what Think Big Partners is all about and found that it screams Kansas City entrepreneurship.  That's exactly what I love."
