GOOGLE FIBER PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARD
Karan Srivastava, SHHADE
SHHADE, based out of Miami, Florida, stands for Supply Home Health Care Alternatives and Dedicated Education.   SHHADE negotiates contracts with insurance companies to reduce expenses caused by patients who frequently visit the ER for chronic, yet manageable medical conditions. SHHADE provides comprehensive primary care services directly at the patient’s home and regularly follows up with patients to better manage the patient’s health. SHHADE case managers are designated to help the patient address and remove any social or cultural obstacles that impede the patient’s goal for a healthy lifestyle. SHHADE identifies which treatments are cost-effective in producing high quality health benefits. Ultimately, SHHADE aims to reduce the burden of costs insurance companies incur by reducing the number of ER visits from high utilizing patients.
The Finale event concluded with applause and cocktails, appetizers and networking in the Sprint Festival Plaza just a few steps from where Hackovate took place.  Media conducted interviews with the winners, each winner sat down to speak about their experience on the Think Big Innovations podcast, and cheers, laughs and new introductions were made by all.
All in all, Hackovate Health opened the eyes of the healthcare and medical industries to the new, innovative products that are being brought to the market.  The innovation competition truly spoke to those companies and startups who were striving to help consumers understand and navigate the challenging healthcare landscape and realize new health benefits.

“We truly appreciated this entire process,” said Tami Hutchison of eLuminate Health.  “Hackovate has helped us think in new ways and we will use this opportunity to get our product into the market and bring value to consumers in the U.S.”

Liam Ryan of GetHealth (Dublin, Ireland) was announced as the Hackovate first runner-up, receiving a $5,000 cash prize from H&R Block.  The GetHealth mobile app is “Foursquare for health” as it improves consumer health by “checking in” to different healthy activities.  The app incorporates “motifications”, notifications to help consumers improve their health.  GetHealth has already been named an effective WaaS (wellness as a service).

“As a company with a base in New York and Ireland, we are always looking for opportunities to showcase in the United States on a global scale.  Hackovate allowed us to not only do that, but to think big too,” said Liam Ryan of GetHealth.

In addition, Scott Speranza of InAssist Health Management Solution (Torrance, CA) was announced as the second runner-up and received a $2,500 prize courtesy of H&R Block.  InAssist specializes in medical protection services and solves for the problem of hospital overcharges.  With an integrated portal, consumers can log in to the InAssist system to pay medical bills and better understand what they are getting charged for.  InAssist incorporates TotalCare, which allows for a proprietary method for carriers and doctors.

H&R Block and Think Big Partners Announce Hackovate Health 2013

With a new era of health care on the door step and more than three out of four consumers unaware of the role of the 2012 tax return on their health care coverage next fall, H&R Block and early-stage business incubator and startup accelerator Think Big Partners announce the creation of Hackovate Health 2013. The competition is designed to identify innovative mobile, online, social and other applications that help consumers navigate the new healthcare landscape.

“There are significant financial considerations for millions of consumers under the new health care rules, including who qualifies for subsidies,” said Bill Cobb, President and Chief Executive Officer of H&R Block. “Technology-based innovation has the potential to address many of the consumer-based financial implications that stem from the rollout of the new health care law.”

Teams, big and small, are encouraged to compete in the three-month long competition, which culminates in H&R Block identifying 10 teams to convene in Kansas City in February to turn their promising ideas into new companies. The Hackovate process will involve coaching and mentoring from business, policy and investor community leaders in the entrepreneurship and healthcare arenas. Additionally, prizes courtesy of H&R Block will be awarded to the top three innovative ideas as determined by a panel of judges.

“Rising health care costs remain one of the largest expenses facing Americans today,” said Kushagra Saxena, Chief Strategy Officer at H&R Block.  “That is one reason H&R Block is proud to be the power behind Hackovate Health—to support innovation and the startup community in identifying solutions that address our clients’ core healthcare reform needs.”

“As an early-stage technology accelerator, we see a lot of great ideas every day,” says Herb Sih, co-founder and managing partner of Think Big Partners.  “Having the ability to work with an innovative company like H&R Block is an extremely unique opportunity for entrepreneurs.  This is the chance for entrepreneurs to solve a specific problem and the opportunity to work with the strength, expertise and leadership of H&R Block.”

Entrepreneurs are encouraged to submit their innovative ideas from November 19, 2012 until January 27, 2012 on the Hackovate Health website (to launch soon). Ten finalists will be announced in late January and will participate in the hackathon portion and undergo coaching, mentoring and the selection process.  Hackovate will conclude on February 26, 2012 with entrepreneurs presenting their solutions during the grand finale at Union Station in Kansas City, Missouri.

KC Chamber and Think Big: A Conference Without a Name is an Innovator's Opportunity

The Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce and Think Big Partners are hosting a Kansas City innovation and entrepreneur conference on June 20, 2012...but they need your help in picking out a conference name.

WRITTEN BY ALLISON WAY, SENIOR COPYWRITER AND CHIEF EDITOR

The Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce and Think Big Partners are teaming up with H&R Block to host an innovation and entrepreneurship conference and are seeking the community’s help in naming the conference.

The all-day conference, formerly known as the Chamber’s Innovation Conference and Think Big Kansas City will be hosted by H&R Block and will take place on June 20th, 2012, at the H&R Block corporate headquarters building in downtown Kansas City. The mission of the conference is to help build the city of entrepreneurs, to provide startup inspiration for area entrepreneurs and to help foster innovation and creativity in Kansas City.

“There has never been a better time to host an innovation conference in Kansas City,” said Kristi Wyatt, Senior Vice President of Public Policy and Programs for the Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce. “With the implementation of Google Fiber, the efforts from the Kauffman Foundation, the presence of the UMKC Bloch School, the Big 5 initiatives and now this conference, we are truly fostering America’s most entrepreneurial city.”

This premiere conference for innovators and entrepreneurs allows for creative minds to come together under one roof to celebrate innovation and entrepreneurship, build the Kansas City startup scene, and find motivation and inspiration to turn ideas into something big.

“This innovation conference is just the first step toward making Kansas City a part of the Think Big Nation,” said Herb Sih, Managing Partner and Co-Founder of Think Big Partners. “We believe that by collaborating with other entrepreneurial organizations, seizing local, regional and national opportunities and serving more Midwestern entrepreneurs, we can identify more great ideas, grow more profitable companies and create more jobs in Kansas City.”

In order to foster community involvement, the Kansas City Chamber and Think Big Partners are asking innovators, entrepreneurs and creative minds to submit name ideas for the innovation and entrepreneur conference. To participate, names should be submitted via the KC2012 website by March 2, 2012. The official name will be selected by the Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce and Think Big Partners. The winner of the naming contest will receive a free ticket for the life of the conference as well as other prizes.

Kansas City’s newest innovation conference is also looking for other leaders in the Kansas City business community to get involved through sponsorship or speaker opportunities. To learn more about getting involved, please visit http://www.kc2012.com or call 816.842.5244.

8 Reasons Why Kansas City Coworking Works

"Coworking spaces only belong in Silicon Valley."

"There aren't any coworking spaces in Kansas City."

"Coworking is just a fad."

False. False. False.

Working in a shared and collaborative coworking space has become a trend for entrepreneurs and small business owners alike.  But these coworking spots are not just popping up in Silicon Valley or tech hubs like Boston and Austin.  Coworking spaces are everywhere; from Denver to Nashville, New Orleans to Omaha.  And of course, there are a few dynamite coworking spaces in Kansas City

But of all cities, why cowork in the City of Fountains?  There are 8 great reasons why Kansas City coworking may be just what you need.

1. Kansas City is creative
With the Kansas City Maker Faire, the KC Chamber Innovation Conference and many other creative events, companies, and people, Kansas City is bursting with creativity and innovation.  Come see the creativity for yourself in any of Kansas City's coworking spaces.

2. Kansas City is tight-knit
Kansas City is big enough to make an impact, but small enough to remain a tight-knit community.  That means that Kansas City is a friendly, neighborly city in the heart of America.

3. Kansas City is thriving
Google Fiber.  Zaarly.  Think Big Partners.  These are just a few examples of the new implementations that are catching some major attention in Kansas City.  These additions to KC prove that the city is growing and thriving, making it the ideal spot to cowork.

4. Kansas City is busy
With dozens of daily networking events, launch parties, cocktail receptions and banquets, Kansas City is always in hustle-and-bustle mode.  That means that there are hundreds of people to meet, places to see and events to attend.

5. Kansas City is entrepreneurially strong
Kansas City has a vibrancy to it and much of it comes from the startups that have launched in the area.  From hundreds of local restaurants to thriving startup companies, Kansas City is becoming a hub for entrepreneurs and small businesses alike.

6. Kansas City has history
Although KC is strong when it comes to startups and entrepreneurship, it is also rich in big business history.  From Helzberg to H&R Block to Hallmark (the 3 big H's), Kansas City knows how to take a small businesses and make them go down in history.

7. Kansas City is refreshing
Get away from the superficialities of the Silicon Valley area and steer clear of the smog taking over Boston and come to Kansas City to cowork!  If you need a step away from the obvious tech hubs of the nation, Kansas City is the city to cowork in.

8. Kansas City has the space
Currently, Kansas City has three very different coworking spaces.  Innovation Cafe, Officeport and bizperc all target unique entrepreneurs, freelancers and small business owners who are looking to network, think outside the box and of course...cowork.

The 3 Big H's of Kansas City: Helzberg, H&R Block, Hallmark

Is it a coincidence that three of Kansas City’s big original companies start with the letter “H”?  Although it may be just a coincidence, there’s no doubt that Helzberg, H&R Block and Hallmark (all Kansas City-based companies), have become Huge and Honorable companies by implementing Hard work, Holistic strategies, and, of course, a touch of Happiness.  Entrepreneurs, these 3 H’s may have something to teach you.

Helzberg Diamonds
Drive success under any condition. When the Depression began in the 1920s, Helzberg Diamonds didn’t sink—it flourished.  This company is living proof that even under difficult economic times, a company can still succeed as long as it has the right people pushing it.  Even during World War II, Helzberg churned out advertisements with patriotic themes and marketed its “Certified Perfect” diamonds to get ahead of the competition.
Be sure to analyze (and reanalyze) your target market. Helzberg Diamonds was a company that focused on growing—and in order to grow, Helzberg had to branch out.  The company retrenched to the suburbs in the 1960s and 70s in order to target a new market.  This changed Helzberg’s image as well—they were finally portrayed as a “youthful” business.  Additionally, Helzberg began offering mail-order business in the early 1950s for rural customers.
Revamp the company.  Helzberg reinvented itself over and over again.  One of its biggest makeovers was during the 1980s when most stores were introduced in “superstore” format.  Helzberg stores became some of the biggest jewelry stores in the nation.  It’s something that made Helzberg different than its competitors.
H&R Block

Take that leap of faith.  Henry Bloch stumbled upon a pamphlet in the Harvard Library that illustrated the challenges facing America’s small business in the early 1940s.  After reading this message, Henry wanted to help small companies succeed.  In his mind, he imagined a company that provided comprehensive services for small businesses.  And directly after he thought of the idea—he took the leap of faith.

You don’t have to start with a lot.  Henry Bloch started with $5,000 which he borrowed from his aunt.  In 1946, Henry and his brother, Leon, opened the United Business Company which provided bookkeeping services and rented offices right on Main Street in Kansas City.  After nine years of hard work, Henry saw success when he began doing income tax preparation as part of the business and the company became H&R Block.

Hallmark

Focus on quality.  In JC Hall’s autobiography, he wrote, “If a man goes into business with only the idea of making a lot of money, chances are, he won’t.  But if he puts service and quality first, the money will take care of itself.  Producing a first-class product that is a real need is a stronger motivation for success than getting rich.”  JC never let a greeting card reach the market without his stamp of approval—he wanted to be hands-on so that Hallmark would create the best, most quality greeting cards.

Reinvent and renew yourself.  JC Hall made things happen.  He once said, “I don’t like to sit around and wait for something to happen, it’s more fun making it happen!”  This attitude is what led Hallmark to invent modern wrapping paper, and later branch into a television network and develop e-Cards.

As three of Kansas City’s most successful "H" companies, Helzberg Diamonds, H&R Block and Hallmark have many lessons to teach.  Take these lessons into consideration when starting up your own business.  You never know what will Happen!

Keep tHinking big!
