KC Startup inCharge Seeks to Solve Cellphone Battery Issues; Think Big Ventures Invests

The first prototype of an inCharge
charging station.

It’s happened to anyone with a cell phone:  Just when you need your phone the most, you look up at the top right hand corner and gasp; you only have 3% battery left!

What do you do?  Do you power the phone off and save the battery’s juice for when you really need it?  Do you run to the nearest outlet (who knows where that’s located!)?  Do you plug important contacts in your friend’s phone just in case?  Do you just let your battery die and try to survive?

The truth of the matter is, there is no good option.  Until now.

Introducing: inCharge, a new Kansas City startup that aims to provide an easy charging solution for dead cell phone batteries.

Founded by Kansas City entrepreneur Bryan Richard, inCharge LLC aims to place free charging stations for mobile devices in public places such as train stations, shopping centers, sports facilities and other locations with high foot traffic.  According to The Kansas City Business Journal, inCharge will “plug a gap in developing countries between use of cell phones and easy access to electricity to keep the device charged.”

The inCharge charging stations are currently being designed and manufactured here in Kansas City with help from BareSkull Innovation Inc.  The charging stations will incorporate charging “wheels” and plug-ins for all different kinds of phones—Androids, iPhones, Blackberries and even standard flip phones.  Each wheel can hold up to four phones.  Additionally, inCharge charging stations will incorporate interactive advertising opportunities.  With this opportunity, advertisers will attract highly engaged audiences and have the chance to form new types of communication with potential customers.

BareSkull and Richard are currently building two prototypes, both of which will be tested in the Kansas City market.  One will be tested at a local high profile stadium and the other at Kansas City’s Power and Light District.

In addition, inCharge will be installing a trial charging station in Hyderabad, India at the GVK One shopping mall on November 1, 2012.  Because of India’s high population, high teledensity and inconsistent electrical infrastructure, inCharge hopes to gain valuable insight into its new product.

“I went to school for architecture, but it’s been a long time since I could actually design and build something and see it come to life,” explains Bryan Richard, founder of inCharge.  “That has been the most exciting part of this process.”

Think Big Ventures I has taken a lead investor role in the startup with its $50,000 investment in inCharge.  The startup has also received $25,000 from an unnamed private investor and has bootstrapped $50,000.

“Ultimately, our goal is to keep customers connected and to eliminate the problem of dead cell phone batteries,” says Richard.

Update October 1, 2012: inCharge just launched its first charging station at Livestrong Sporting Park this past Friday!  According to Brian Richard, Sporting fans were waiting to charge their phones before the station was even plugged in.  The charging stations are now being pursued by other high traffic locations such as the Power and Light District.  Stay tuned!

Kansas City: America's Smartest City?

Kansas City is slowly becoming known as America's most entrepreneurial city...but will it become America's smartest city too?  Mayor Sly James seems to think so with his State of the City address that occurred earlier this week.

In the State of the City address, James introduced Screampoint, a geomapping technology company from Silicon Valley.  The organization, which has used more advanced, game-like mapping technology for international projects, has been looking for a city to model its platform in North America.  That city could be KC.

According to the Kansas City Business Journal, Mayor James presented screen shots of high-tech maps of Singapore, Abu Dabi and other international locales when discussing how Kansas City could become a smarter city (and perhaps one of the smartest on Earth) with Screampoint.

So what would Screampoint mean for Kansas City?  It could mean syncing up city water, sewer, street, utility and other infrastructure information...for starters.

Think Big Partners is more than thrilled to join the efforts of the Screampoint team.  With our ongoing partnerships with both the city as well as the successful Silicon Valley-based technology company, we hope to continue to change the face of KC...and for the better.

First Google Fiber and then (perhaps) Screampoint.  Where will Kansas City go next?

Social Media Club of Kansas City Presents Building the Gigabit City

The Google Fiber network is said to be up to 100 times faster than the current speed of the Internet.  That's a lot faster.  That's incredibly quick.  That's a time-saver.

But the Social Media Club of Kansas City is one of the first organizations to ask: "What would you do with that extra time?"

The Social Media Club of Kansas City (with sponsorship and help from Brainzooming, KCNext, the Kansas City Public Library, and Polsinelli Shughart) is hosting Building the Gigabit City on October 3rd, 2011 in order to seek input about how Google Fiber high-speed internet access in the home can change peoples' lives for the better.

Leading up to Building the Gigabit City, SMCKC is hosting an online survey so that Kansas City residents and Google Fiber fans could share their ideas on an online platform.  Now, the survey is being taken to the next level through the development of the Building the Gigabit City event at the Kansas City Public Library on the first Monday of October.

At the event, attendees will be divided into groups--Living, Learning and Leading categories--so that ideas can be flushed out with like-minded individuals.  The goal of the event is to bring together home-owners and community residents so that everybody can share how the Google Fiber network could potentially change the lives of KC residents and the world.  This free event will start at 8:30AM and run until 8:00 at night.

If you're interested in attending Building the Gigabit City and giving input about how you think Google Fiber could change the world, be sure to take the online survey from the Social Media Club.  The survey can be found here:  http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/GigabitCity.  More information about the event will be announced soon.  Stay tuned!

How to Read 64,000 Words in 30 Minutes...and Improve Your Business

The average newspaper has about 2,000 words per page.  This means that the Kansas City Business Journal, a 32-page newspaper, has about 64,000 words in each edition.  But which words are the most important to read?  Within those thousands of words, what did you miss?  Questions like this have been asked for years, and now, the Kansas City Business Journal is helping you make the most out of the newspaper.  The Smart Reader Series will teach techniques for finding what you need from the KCBJ in less than 30 minutes each week—and this series is coming to bizperc this month.
Kent Barthol, consumer marketing director of the Kansas City Business Journal, will host the Smart Reader Series event on Tuesday, February 8th from 11:30AM until 1:00 PM at bizperc, 1800 Baltimore Avenue, Kansas City, MO.  NOTICE:  The Smart Reader Series has been cancelled and will be rescheduled for a later date.  Stay tuned for further information.
“My goal is to show people more business opportunities in the paper through the web and through our events so people can discover,” says Barthol.  “I can teach [entrepreneurs] new ways to communicate with clients and prospects, and ultimately, discuss ways that the Business Journal can help them gain a competitive advantage and differentiate themselves from competitors.”
During the Smart Reader Series, attendees will learn techniques for finding what they need out of the Business Journal, business information to help them achieve sales goals, how to pitch their company’s story to the editorial staff and much more.
The Smart Reader Series runs as a workshop as well as a networking opportunity.  During the event, attendees are invited to present themselves and connect with one another.  The event, according to Barthol, is one that “maximizes all opportunities”.
“To be successful, you have to know what’s going on in the business community,” Barthol says.  “The Business Journal delivers that in the form of content and leads that can drive from a newspaper.  By knowing what’s going on in the business community and actively utilizing a product like the Kansas City Business Journal, you will get to a higher level of business conversation.  It will educate you about who to do business with in town and better your business.”
Register today for the Smart Reader Series and learn how you can get the most out of those 64,000 words!

BIG Partners: Think Big Partners and the Kansas City Business Journal Team Up to Host Think Big Kansas City 2011

At Think Big Partners, we are all about collaboration and community.  So as one of our surprises in 2011, we made an announcement last week that excited the entire Kansas City entrepreneurial community.  This coming year’s Premier Conference for Entrepreneurs, Investors and Startups, Think Big Kansas City, will be hosted by Think Big Partners and the Kansas City Business Journal—a collaboration made to strengthen TBKC 2011 as well as the Kansas City startup community.

Last year’s Think Big Kansas City was held in March of 2010 and featured more than fifteen educational sessions, a number of inspirational speakers, and a sold-out crowd of over 425 attendees—from aspiring entrepreneurs, to successful CEOs, to investors.  Last year’s premier conference even featured keynote speaker Chris Gardner, whose real life story of perseverance was the basis of the Hollywood blockbuster, “The Pursuit of Happyness.”

But we are thinking even bigger in 2011.
And in order to make the premier conference even more collaborative, beneficial, informative, and inspirational for the Kansas City entrepreneurial community, we have partnered with the Kansas City Business Journal to host Think Big Kansas City on May 24, 2011.  The Journal, with its in-depth weekly coverage of top local business news, is a natural partner to work with Think Big Partners due to their commitment, support and coverage of entrepreneurship and business in the Kansas City community.
So prepare yourselves, entrepreneurs.  In 2011, TBP and the KC Business Journal are bringing in even more inspirational speakers, business presenters, and networking opportunities to people like YOU!
Here’s your first chance to get involved!  Think Big Partners is currently accepting applications and nominations for speakers and presenters for the Think Big Kansas City 2011 through February 18th 2011.  For more information about the Premier Conference, or to learn more about presenting at the event, please visit http://www.thinkbigkansascity.com/ or call Think Big Partners at (816) 842-5244.
