Your mobile app is one out of 500,000. How will yours get found?

There are a lot of apps.  No one cares about yours.

Ever feel this way?  If you’re an app developer or mobile entrepreneur, chances are, you have.  And we don’t blame you.  There are 500,000+ different apps in the Apple Store alone.  Chances are, yours won’t stand out.

But Juggernaut Interactive, a creative technology lab based out of Omaha, Nebraska, is looking to change this mentality.  This young, Midwestern startup is dedicated to helping to bring new ideas into fully-functioning online communities...and getting people to care about them.

Founded and run by Brian Daniel and Tom Duggin, Juggernaut Interactive was launched after its two co-founders noticed an overwhelmingly broad opportunity in the mobile space one year ago.  Lucky for the two (and the entire Juggernaut team), the company is ahead of the app curve by about six months (which is huge in the app industry).

“More things are moving to mobile,” says Brian Daniel, CEO of Juggernaut Interactive, “it’s an extremely compelling business.”

Juggernaut specializes in incubating product ideas (such as mobile apps) and prepping them for “production phase”.  As soon as an app is ready, it goes through a process run by Electric Human.  Electric Human is the space where Juggernaut designs innovative concepts and builds prototypes, platforms and services that they’re passionate about.

Juggernaut’s most recent creation is an app known as Due Date, which will be rolled out soon.  The app is a stork delivery game which will be featured in the Apple Store in just a matter of weeks.   According to Brian, Tom and Laurin Hogan, interactive producer at Juggernaut, the app is different from other mobile games in the market because it is nurturing rather than destructive.

But Juggernaut’s genius goes far beyond app game development.  The company, although only a year old, has helped build apps and other tech developments for national brands such as Werner Enterprises, Omaha Steaks, All State, Geico, Hard Rock, McDonald’s and more.

Juggernaut Interactive, along with its Electric Human platform, hope to continue to grow in the mobile and app development space for other national brands.  Want to follow Juggernaut’s successes?  Follow Juggernaut online at http://juggernautinteractive.com/.

Tiki Toss 3D Mobile App and bizperc Graduate Announces New Crowdfunding Initiative

After experiencing exponential growth within the past year, Mellow Militia, a Santa Barbara-based (formerly Kansas City-based) app development company, has announced its decision to launch a crowdfunding campaign through the major global funding platform Indiegogo to meet increased demand for the new physical version of its popular mobile app game, Tiki Toss 3D.

Already a favorite among casual gamers, the Tiki Toss 3D app allows iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad users to play and compete against other players in a digital version of thetraditional, island-themed ring toss game. Following the success of Tiki Toss 3D, Mellow Militia decided to create a hard board version of the game, which has since been picked up and sold by nearly 200 retailers in less than a year.

“Our initial thought was that the physical game would make a nice complement to the Tiki Toss 3Dmobile app,” said Mellow Militia co-founder Chris Puglisi.  “But little did we know that Tiki Toss would take on a life of its own after we debuted the physical product,” he added.

Previously, Mellow Militia had been piecing together orders in small batches, but with constant re-orders, new accounts and direct retail sales, the company experienced a need for added support to keep up with its explosive growth. Mellow Militia says the main goal for its Idiegogo campaign is to raise the needed capital for funding the first large-scale production run of Tiki Toss.

“A year ago, this was a night and weekend project for Chris, myself and my wife Amy,” said Mellow Militia co-founder Kyle McGetrick. “But today it’s a full-time job, and we need to keep the shelves of our existing accounts stocked and the inventory to supply the new accounts that are approaching us every day,” he continued.

Increasingly, crowdfunding is becoming a mainstream method for financing a variety of ventures. Confident in the crowdfunding trend, Mellow Militia is excited to engage the Indiegogo community as it takes its next steps financially and socially.

To express its gratitude for campaign supporters, Mellow Militia is offering a limited edition, 2012 Indiegogo version of its Tiki Toss game, as well as some great, customized packages.

“We could not have come this far without the amazing support of our community,” said McGetrick.“ Friends and family have pitched in to help build, package and ship more than 10,000Tiki Toss games across the country. We’re ready to take it to the next level,” he added.

GoMobileKC Recap: Mobile Entrepreneurs & App Developers Ready to Change the World

“We live in a different world now…do you guys see it? The world has changed and as a result of it we have to change.”  These were the opening words from Vince Vaughn, CEO of Why Status Quo and host of the GoMobileKC mini conference last Thursday.  GoMobileKC was a component to One Week KC, a 9-day endeavor to make Kansas City the most entrepreneurial city in the nation.

This event brought in app developers and mobile entrepreneurs from around the Midwest who were ready to do exactly what Vaughn stated at the beginning of the conference—change.  More specifically, the attendees were ready to create change for others through the use of mobile technology.  The conference also showcased two of the city’s best mobile talent—Captain Dan Stratman, mastermind behind the Airport Life app and Kirk Hasenzahl, CEO of Rarewire

The old adage, “Do what you know” was all the inspiration Stratman needed to create his app in 2010.  As a former pilot, he utilized his knowledge of the airline industry as his competitive advantage among the pre-existing airline apps and since then has seen it grow to 21,000 downloads without any formal marketing.  Stratman advised the crowd that creating an app was a long and frustrating process full of challenges.  He noted that if an entrepreneur decides to develop an app, it’s important to be passionate, learn everything there is to know about the business world, use marketing, learn technology and most importantly, do not be afraid to ask for help.

Hasenzahl’s inspiration did not come from a quote but rather a device; Apple’s iPad.  The size of the screen spawned the idea for his company Rarewire, which provides a service that allows others to create apps without being a programmer.  With 10 billion app downloads in 2011 and an expected 185 billion downloads in 2014, it is no doubt Hasenzahl joined the right industry two years ago.  “It’s a gold rush,” he said, “and you want to be the guy selling the shovels.”  Hasenzahl predicts industry growth within app promotion, rich media ad service, and mobile/app security and promoted inspiration for individuals pondering the app world to get out there and go for it.

The conference ended with the announcement of an iPad 3 winner and what Vaughn described as a “Town Hall meeting” type discussion.  Attendees and speakers were able to interact through open forum and share expertise on various components of the mobile industry.

One Week KC's Only Mobile Entrepreneurship Event: GoMobileKC

When over 300,000 apps have been developed in 3 years and apps have been downloaded over 10.9 billion times, it's become pretty obvious: mobile entrepreneurship is the new black.  And it's the exact reason that Vince Vaughan, President and Founder of Why Status Quo, has decided to host One Week KC's only mobile event--GoMobileKC.

GoMobileKC is a mobile mini-conference during One Week KC that will act as the city-wide nerve center for mobile entrepreneurs, app developers and startups to learn, share and lead in a mobile-driven paradigm. The event takes place on June 21, 2012 from 7:00-9:00pm at bizperc.

GoMobileKC will cover the challenges that many mobile entrepreneurs face, discuss what will happen after the mobile “Gold Rush”, feature presentations from two mobile entrepreneurs and address business challenges from the audience.  Speakers include Kirk Hasenzahl, co-founder and CEO of RareWire and Dan Stratman, founder of AirportLife.

GoMobileKC will leave the audience members with cascades of information about the mobile age and how mobile has impacted entrepreneurship.  The audience will walk away with 1) threats to avoid when they don’t use ambition as part of their business strategy, especially when it pertains to mobile; 2) the obligations a business must use when tackling mobile; and 3) an awareness of the opportunities that mobile may have for a today’s Kansas City entrepreneur.

“Mobile is part of a broader revolution,” says Vince Vaughan, organizer of GoMobileKC.  “We have gone from computer to social to mobile really fast.  It’s almost too much to keep up with.  The companies that don’t incorporate mobile as part of their business strategy, will be the ones stuck and left out in the cold.”

GoMobileKC is a part of One Week KC, a nine-day celebration of entrepreneurship from June 18-26, 2012 in Kansas City, Missouri.  The mini-conference is the premier  mobile business event taking place during One Week KC.  It will feature practical, yet uncommon advice for  entrepreneurs, app developers and business leaders interested in taking the leap into the mobile world.

“This is the premier mobile business event taking place during One Week KC,” says Vaughan.  “It’s the one event that a mobile entrepreneur has to go to.  If they don’t go, they risk ceding ground to competitors already working in this new space.”

GoMobileKC will take place on June 21, 2012 from 7:00-9:00pm Think Big Partners’ coworking space, bizperc, at 1800 Baltimore in Kansas City, Missouri.  To learn more about GoMobileKC, visit www.gomobilekc.com.

PART 3: The Evolution of the Mobile Gaming App

PART 3: Giving Your App a Real-Life Spin

For the past few months, we have been reporting on the progress of Mellow Militia’s newest mobile gaming app that we have been calling The Next Social Word Game as well as the company’s other efforts such as Tiki Toss 3D.  Founded by Chris Puglisi and Kyle McGetrick, Mellow Militia is a mobile application startup based out of Kansas City, Missouri.  The company has provided hundreds of mobile app developers inside-information about creating mobile apps (just check out Part 1 and Part 2!).

And now...we give you Part 3: Giving Your App a Real-Life Spin.

Retail-ize Your App
Angry Birds popularized its game by manufacturing cute stuffed animals of their Angry Birds mascots. And when your app gets big enough, giving it a real-life spin can provide additional revenue.  Mellow Militia went this route and has developed physical Tiki Toss Hook & Ring games alongside its mobile app.

In order to get Tiki Toss’s retail product on the map, Mellow Militia has been traveling to a handful of cities throughout the nation to showcase at trade shows.  Most recently, Kyle traveled to Orlando for Surf Expo and the Orlando Gift Show.  Since launching the hard good product (Tiki Toss), Mellow Militia has secured over 110 wholesale accounts in 16 states, and is growing rapidly.  This most recent show was a huge success, and Mellow Militia was able to get Tiki Toss into 46 new stores and build solid relationships with reps and distributors.

“The Surf Expo & Gift Shows are extremely successful for us,” said Chris Puglisi of attending tradeshows.  “We’re actually selling these games in 33 different types of stores.  People are responding very well to the Mellow Militia brand.  We introduced hats at the latest shows and sold out of them in the first day. Our existing clients are already asking us for more products!”

Perfect-ize Your App
In previous blog posts, The Next Social Word Game was undergoing scrutiny from both Mellow Militia and from investors.  And today, the app continues to be perfected.  The team has gone back to the drawing born to rework the game’s design.  Chris, however, states that game will be finalized soon.  And after going back to the drawing board multiple times, it seems as if the game will be ready to go into the development stage!

In tandem with The Next Social Word Game’s release, Mellow Militia has been in design and development with a social photo sharing app that combines the top features of some of the leading photo/camera apps on the market today.

“We saw a real opportunity to enhance the design and feature-set of the current, popular photo sharing apps like Instagram & Pinterest” says Chris. “We’re really excited about this one – it connects people socially but in a whole different way. We’re in the development phase already, and targeting a mid April release”

In addition, Chris notes the importance of collaboration in developing these games.  “We've been able to forge invaluable partnerships throughout this experience.  We now have a dedicated team of great engineers and designers to help us build out our ideas.  Developing these partnerships opens up huge possibilities for us."

Real-ize the Potential for More

“I believe that the new app we’re creating will be an Instagram and Pinterest killer,” said McGetrick of the new venture.

This app is just one of many that Mellow Militia wants to develop this year.  In fact, MM’s goal is 10 new apps in 2012 and to have each app incorporate the “experience continuum” (making apps accessible across mobile, web and on social media).

“2012 will allow us to play with volume,” said Chris.  “We want each app to stand on it’s own and stay true to our goals of being high quality, fun, engaging and simple to use” says Chris.

Be sure to stay tuned for more information and updates from Chris, Kyle and the Mellow Militia team!

The Future of the Media Industry (and What Kickanotch is Doing to Save It)

The statistics on Kickanotch's site don't lie:

Google reported $1 billion in mobile advertising revenue in 2010.

Mobile app revenues will triple compared to the year before.

In 5 years, a majority of people will access Internet only through mobile devices.

What does this mean?  It means that if your business isn't mobile, you may not get found.  And Kickanotch makes going mobile not only possible, but also easy.

Kickanotch, a Kansas City-based startup, is a software-as-a-service (SAAS) that allows the media to expand their audiences through mobile app creation and monetization.  You may have heard of hundreds of other companies that do what Kickanotch does, so how does the Midwest startup stand out from the rest?  In order to answer that, we need to focus less on what Kickanotch does and focus more on the problem that it solves.

I had the opportunity to sit down with Kickanotch's marketing manager, Gabe Barnes.  He explained that Kickanotch specializes in saving the media industry by helping them get mobile, fast.

"It's a dying industry," says Gabe.  "People are obviously gravitating now toward mobile.  Kickanotch can help media make the digital a friend as opposed to having to fight it every day."

About 14 months ago, Andy Lynn, founder and CEO of Kickanotch, was hired to find a mobile solution for a local Kansas City radio station.  After pinning down a solution, Andy found that a back-end system would be the best approach to take.  After extensive research and hefty development, Andy and his team created the viable product known as Kickanotch.

The previous paragraph makes it sound like Kickanotch was an overnight success.  But as all entrepreneurs know, it takes more than just a snap of the fingers and a couple of networking events in order to lock down funding, gain exposure and find steady clients.

Lucky for Kickanotch, the startup got a little help.  Andy worked closely with Mike Carter of Carter Broadcast Group and eventually locked down some funding.  Soon after, Kickanotch saw a $1.1 million investment from 42 Ventures out of Salt Lake City.  The Midwest startup continues to work on more deals for the future, as the company (and the industry's need for its existence) continues to grow.

"The hardest part of a startup company is the uncertainty," says Gabe of his day-to-day work life.  "We never know what the future will hold for us.  So, we just take it a day at a time...but as you know, there is never enough time in the day!"

But what about the best part?  "The best part of this company is seeing it be built from the ground up," he says.  "It's amazing to work with clients and to see how lit up they get when they realize how Kickanotch works."

What Does it Take to Become the #1 App on iTunes? Entrepreneurs from iBright Studios Answer

WRITTEN BY ALLISON WAY, SENIOR COPYWRITER & CHIEF EDITOR
When 99% of new apps fail, it seems like a nearly impossible task to even get in the Top 100 list on iTunes.  But app developers will do almost anything just to see their app’s name on that list.  Developers want that feeling of accomplishment—knowing that their app made a difference, entertained millions or transformed a mobile platform.  But what does it feel like to snag a top 10 spot on iTunes?  Or even better, what does it feel like to have that number one slot?  I caught up with Bryce Katz and Justin McAuley, co-founders of iBright Studios, to ask them what it’s like to be the number 1 spot on iTunes for apps and what it takes to get there.

Bryce and Justin first began collaborating shortly after graduating from Kansas University.  Bryce was at his first job in commercial real estate and noticed that the market was dropping severely.  Justin couldn’t stop researching apps and even learned about a few teenagers who were making $10,000 a day just from app development.  When the two friends put their heads together, it seemed like a no-brainer:  They would develop an app.

But it wasn’t that easy.  Bryce and Justin are not developers themselves, so they had to hire out a slew of savvy tech aficionados to help build the backbone for their new app company, iBright Studios.  After many months of blood, sweat and tears, Bryce, Justin and their team of developers launched TightWire, a hilarious and entertaining game app that snagged the number one slot on iTunes.

“The game is a quick fix for comedy and entertainment,” said Justin.  “It’s not at all strategic—it’s just funny.  We were lucky to develop this unique app on a super saturated market.”

iBright Studios has developed seven other action/arcade game apps, but TightWire has been the most successful.  The game has been on the iTunes Top 10 list three times and has had over 5 million downloads worldwide; a majority in the United States, Japan and Italy.  The app has been so successful that iBright Studios was contacted by Universal Studios a few weeks ago to see if the app could be featured in its next upcoming film (a sequel to the popular movie Knocked Up).  It’s safe to say that iBright Studios has seen success in a small amount of time.

“The best part of this process has been the success we’ve seen...even with the little that we knew,” said Bryce.

Justin agreed.  “We have put in a lot of hard work.  It’s cool to finally see it pay off.  When 99.9% of people in this business fail and fail hard, we feel extremely lucky.”

What’s next for Bryce, Justin and the clan at iBright Studios?  The co-founders noted that in the app development world, there are periods where you feel like you’re in a pure sprint and then dramatic downtime periods.  Currently, the team has decided to focus more on marketing the product and getting more exposure through social media.  It shouldn’t be too difficult, considering the mass amount of support that TightWire has received from developers and avid game players.

If there is one lesson that Bryce and Justin have learned while building iBright Studios, it has been to keep trying no matter how difficult it may be.

“Don’t get down on yourself,” advises Bryce.  “Just keep going.”

“There are going to be obstacles no matter what,” agrees Justin.  “We made a lot of mistakes, but we got them out of the way early.  We had high expectations and we accomplished them.”

PART 2: The Evolution of a Mobile Gaming App

PART 2: Design.  Evaluate. Repeat.

WRITTEN BY ALLISON WAY, SENIOR COPYWRITER & CHIEF EDITOR

A few weeks ago, we introduced you to Chris Puglisi and Kyle McGetrick, founders of MellowMilitia (a successful mobile application company based out of Kansas City, Missouri).  As a part of our blog series about mobile applications, we have been following Chris and Kyle on their road to creating The Next Social Word Game.

In Part 1, we covered the first 8 steps to creating a successful mobile gaming app.  These steps included finding the idea, deciding on game type, storyboarding, determining mobility, monetizing, coding and using social media to market.  Read Part 1 of the blog series here: Part 1:The Evolution of a Mobile Gaming App.

So what's next?  We caught up with Chris Puglisi to see how The Next Social Word Game is progressing and what stage of the process the new application is in.  Chris and Kyle filled us in:

Currently, Mellow Militia is finalizing design.  But as many developers know, this phase can involve several iterations, as new research is performed and feedback solicited.  In the last three weeks, Mellow Militia took a step back and took another look at the competition, researched mobile gaming usage, evaluated mobile gamer styles and reviewed feedback provided by potential investors.  After careful review and consideration, they decided to embark on another round of design to further optimize, enhance and ultimately appeal to a larger audience.

The Mellow Militia team decided to add two new game modes, each targeting a specific “style” of mobile gamer.

“Initially, we had a single style of gameplay which was based on the original premise of this nostalgic game, though as we dug deeper, we realized that although this game style would appeal to a large percentage of mobile app users,  there were  other styles of users that we weren’t focused on,” says Chris Puglisi.

The “classic” game mode (the original and only planned game style) required a player to spend 20-30 minutes playing the game.  But there’s an entire (and sizable) mobile audience out there that exists that doesn’t have that amount of time to commit to a game. Chris & Kyle realized that, like themselves, they were frequently fielding text messages and phone calls while playing a game.

“We grouped mobile gamers into three categories,” explains the Mellow Militia team.  “The first being those that can commit the 20 or so minutes to playing a few ‘rounds’ of the game, the second being those that typically only have a few minutes here and there throughout the day to play, and the third are those gamers that like to play at their leisure, in small increments of time (akin to Words With Friends).”

With the three types of mobile gamers identified, Chris & Kyle were able to rearchitect and redesign the game to include the two additional game modes.  Now there’s a game mode that suits every player’s lifestyle and gaming style.  In addition, social status, points and achievements can still be accumulated within any game mode. This change is adding several weeks to the design and development schedule (and additional costs), and a few long nights and weekends putting it all together.

"Going back and tweaking is worth the pain," says Chris Puglisi.  "Now we have the gameplay fine tuned.  The game now appeals to several ‘styles’ of players."

The game is now more focused on continued play and high DAU (or Daily Active Users).  When Mellow Militia first presented The Next Social Word Game to investors, it appealed to the player who could dedicate 15, 20 or even 30 minutes to the game.  Investors scratched their heads and one asked, "What about the people who don't have time to play for that long?"  After the question was asked, Chris and Kyle went back to the drawing board and determined two different styles of users (rapid play and less rapid play) for The Next Social Word Game.

“We’re even more excited about the Next Social Word Game now that we’ve added the additional game modes,” says Kyle of the change.  “We truly believe that we have a game mode that suits a variety of gaming styles and fits several lifestyles.”

But Mellow Militia has done more than just reevaluated its audience and gameplay.  The Next Social Word Game is also well into the design phase as.  The one piece of advice that Chris has for apps in the design phase?  "It’s easy to get caught up in design, and trying to create an app that appeals to absolutely everyone. Don't overdesign and overbuild, instead determine which feedback is most critical, scope the effort and determine the value added by that change.

Mellow Militia has proven that it's worth it to reevaluate your game early on.  According to Chris, "It is less costly to go back to the drawing board early, before you start coding.  It's worth taking the extra time.  You may be excited to push an app out to market, but first impressions are critical!"

In addition, Mellow Militia is lining up  marketers and  sponsors for The Next Social Word Game.  The company is also working with investors and looking for more investors to close the round of $250K in funding by mid-January.

“This is very exciting opportunity that has the key elements of success great product, great marketing and perfect timing,” says Kyle.  “We’re looking for key investors who want to be involved in the exciting app market and be part of a major title.”

Be sure to stay tuned for Part 3 of building a mobile gaming app!

PART 1: The Evolution of a Mobile Gaming App

PART 1: The Initial Steps in Creating the Next Social Word Game

Words With Friends.  Angry Birds.  Fruit Ninja.  Every once and awhile, a new app comes around that seems to change the face of mobile gaming.  So what new game app will take the spotlight next?  What game will be distracting people during important meetings?  What game will travelers be tapping away on when waiting for a plane in the airport?  What will be the mobile game causing that vibrating buzz on phones in schools, offices and homes alike?
What does it take to create the next sensation in the mobile gaming space?
In order to answer this question, we decided to follow Chris Puglisi and Kyle McGetrick, founders of Mellow Militia (a successful mobile application company based out of Kansas City, Missouri) on their road to creating The Next Social Word Game.  In this many-part series, we will be exploring the world of mobile app development and following Mellow Militia on their mission to develop a top 25  mobile gaming app.  Our exploration will range from what it takes to develop and execute a mobile app effectively to launching the Next Social Word Game*, to the potential return for a company like Mellow Militia.  Care to join us for the ride?  Then take a look at the first phase of the life of a mobile game app—the initial steps in creating the Next Social Word Game:
A bit of background: Mellow Militia has an investor commitment for 25% of the capital that will be required for this venture.  Countless hours over several months have gone into transforming the original concept into a viable model that investors can grasp on multiple levels including the game itself, the mobile gaming market and of course, the potential return on investment which, in this case, equates to a great return on investment based on realistic (not stretch) goals and projections.  This commitment kick-starts the project allowing for advanced design and app development to be put in motion while Chris and Kyle continue to raise capital to meet their total goal.  Reaching this stage didn’t happen overnight, and the partners are very pleased with the initial commitment, considering it a verification of their concept and work.  A lot of preparation goes into making a Top 25 Gaming App.  So what did Chris and Kyle do first?
*The Next Social Word Game is what the new application will be referred to for the time being.
STEP 1: Find the Idea
As many mobile app game developers know, it all begins with an idea.  From that idea, it is important to look to the core foundation of the concept and answer the most important questions: Does this mobile app have stickiness?  Is this a game you would want to play?  Is this something that people will be excited about?  Will others play with you? And more importantly, will they invite their friends?
According to Chris Puglisi, everyone has an idea for a mobile app.  Since the launch of Mellow Militia’s initial release, Tiki Toss 3D, the partners have been inundated with ideas stemming from every angle imaginable.  In addition to the inquiries that the company receives through their business network and website, Chris comments that every personal acquaintance has a handful of ideas, along with virtually any stranger who learns that we are in the mobile app space.
“The range of ideas is borderline overwhelming, both in subject and in quality,” says Chris.  “You will start with ten different ideas and fifty other ideas will be brought to you.  But you have to ask yourself, ‘Why this app?  Why is this worth my time?  Why is this worth the investment?  Is this a new idea?  If it has been done already, in what ways can we improve upon the concept?”
STEP 2:  Decide on the Type of Game
In order for Mellow Militia to develop The Next Social Word Game, they had to first decide what type of game it was going to be.  The first key questions: single player, two player, multi-player or social?  Chris and Kyle decided that they wanted their next game to have a sense of community.  Therefore, they decided to take a look at Words With Friends—one of the most popular games in the app world today and one of their favorite models.  Words With Friends currently has 2.5 million daily active users and 5 million monthly active users.  When you consider the user base along with the fact that the game was purchased early on by Zynga for tens of millions of dollars, you have to ask: Is there a better model to emulate than that?
STEP 3: Storyboard!
Chris suggests to develop a half page document with findings and decisions from Step 1 and Step 2 and then to create a storyboard for your mobile game app.  Storyboarding can take months and involves a large number of talented people.  Chris suggests wire framing your screens so that the entire game flows.  Another part of the storyboarding step is to research, research, research!  Never stop looking at what the marketing trends are and what type of game is on top.
“One of the most challenging aspects to creating the storyboard is confining the concept,” says Chris.  “When you actually start diagraming and putting the concept on paper, the project inevitably takes on a life of its own.  Idea after idea; never-ending possibilities.  Many of the ideas are amazing and so much growth is realized, but at some point you have to put a cap on it, define the specs, commit and move to the level.”
STEP 4: Determine the Game’s Mobility
There are another series of questions to ask yourself when it comes to the mobility of a game app.  How does the game translate across various mobile platforms?   What are the social hooks that can be implemented?  Can you invite players?  Will it go viral?  Can you integrate into social networks?  Do you want a group chat?  What will motivate people to continue to play? The list goes on and on.
So what did Mellow Militia do?  The company incorporated the game so that Android, Blackberry and iPhone users can all play together.  In addition, Chris and Kyle have decided that The Next Social Word Game will incorporate social status and social rewards that will motivate players to continue game play.
“Having a true community is our goal.  We are building the app to accommodate up to 13 players per gaming instance with thousands of parallel instances in play at all times,” Chris explains.  “Players will be able to chat within the app across all of these instances.  Communication expands outside the app allowing the community to incorporate their Facebook and Twitter contacts to arrange group play at any time.   Points will be cumulative for the lifetime of the player’s involvement in the community.  This allows for leveling up through skill sets, accumulation of rewards, trophies and social badges; all of which are necessary in maintaining an on line social community.”
Mellow Militia also decided to offer the app for free along with a paid or premium version.  The free version will feature advertisements.  The premium version will be ad-free and grant access to the advanced skill levels.  This motivates more players to buy, buy, buy!
STEP 5:  Monetize
A game developer must next determine how the game will be monetized.  This step requires looking at ad and revenue models as well as the models of competitor games.  Use this step to negotiate with ad vendors and look at the acquisition.  You must  largely determine your marketing plan and advertising budget before the first line of code is written.
Many mobile gaming apps have a free version that displays ads at undisruptive moments.  Paid versions are commonly ad free.  Mellow Militia has decided to go another route.  They will offer a free version of The Next Social Word Game without ads for the first three months.  After the first three months, ads will be integrated in.  In the premium version, the ads will disappear.  In addition, Chris has decided to use Flurry—a proven app marketing tool—for the ads in The Next Social Word Game.
Another important part of this step is to map out the overall budget create projections.  All possible expenses have to be balanced with several potential revenue scenarios.  As it is essential that nothing gets overlooked here, the result is a stack of spreadsheets outlining a variety of financial scenarios ranging from failure, to conservative, to grand slam outcomes.   Mellow Militia has created a target goal of $2.6 million in a 24 month period for The Next Social Word Game.  Determine your goal and calculate how much money it will take to get you there (and be sure to keep in mind the facts! 95% of apps make less than $1 per day!).
STEP 6: Get the Moo-la!
Step 6 is dreaded by many: the funding stage.  “It’s important to put together a presentation for both investors and vendors,” says Chris of his experience in the funding phase.  “Be sure that you present with one goal in mind: to provide ROI for your potential investors.”
There are many challenges to fundraising.  It can be very difficult to even get an audience. One of the challenges that Mellow Militia has experienced, like many other app development companies, is implementing funder’s feedback and suggestions.
“The input is often very very intuitive and valuable and it can be eye-opening to see the outside perspective,” both Chris and Kyle say.  “The challenge is in finding the balance between implementing while not losing sight of the original plan.  In this case, we went back to the drawing board to make some adjustments to how quickly (or slowly) this game will move.  Being open to the insight of our potential second investor, our product, we believe, has significantly improved.”
STEP 7: Start coding
Finally, the step that developers everywhere have been waiting for: the coding phase.  It took Mellow Militia eight months of research and preparation to get to the coding phase for The Next Social Word Game.  Coding is just beginning, so we will keep you posted as to the progress throughout this series.
STEP 8: Amp Up the Social Media
The Next Social Word Game is (quite obviously) a social game.  Therefore, it will require very significant attention from social networks like Facebook and Twitter in order to become the success that Chris and Kyle anticipate.  This is yet another project that begins pre -launch and carries throughout the life of a social gaming app.
“Keeping the community involved through these standard outlets is an absolute must in the social gaming world,” Chris articulates.  “This is a daily endeavor and requires a dedicated team who are motivated by a love of the game and community engagement.”
Marketing through press releases and within the iTunes app store and other app markets can also be considered social media (but in general are a whole other animal that will be discussed in another post!).
One of the main reasons that The Next Social Word Game has looked to the Words With Friends model in planning is that this knockout game acquired 60% of it’s user base through word of mouth, largely through online social networks.   With a very slim marketing spend, Words With Friends still went viral.  Every so often, an app will make the Top 25 App list (even though it may not mean to—cue Angry Birds!).  Mellow Militia would be very happy to see this happen, but does not plan on taking that chance.  The vast majority of their budget will go to targeted marketing, ensuring that the necessary daily active user base is acquired.
Chris and Kyle both believe that it’s not about the marketing, it’s about the product:  “It starts with creating a great product.  Once you have the product in hand, you have to let the world know.  That is our responsibility, but we hope that we will have the support and help of our players in spreading the word!”
We have only scratched the surface of mobile app development for games.  So what in the world should a developer do next?  Tune in for PART 2 when we check back with Mellow Militia and the evolution of The Next Social Word Game and how you can make or break it in the app world.

Top 5 Things Google Fiber Can Do for Kansas City (And 5 It Can Do for the World)

A lot of excitement has been building up around the implementation of Google Fiber in Kansas City.  Organizations such as FiberKC.biz are being developed, discussions on sites such as KCMOmentum and Facebook are exploding, and challenges and competitions such as the Gigabit Challenge are formulating in anticipation of Google Fiber.  But when it all comes down to it, what is Google Fiber really doing for Kansas City?  And even more importantly, what is Google Fiber doing for the world?

Top 5 Things Google Fiber Can Do for Kansas City:
1.  Assist Startups and Entrepreneurs
As one of the most well-known blogs in the Kansas City entrepreneurial spectrum, we cannot help but note first and foremost that Kansas City’s entrepreneurs and startup companies will benefit greatly from the implementation of Google Fiber.  Google is extremely interested in seeing what developers and entrepreneurs will create with ultra high-speeds; new apps, online businesses and other startups that we cannot even imagine yet are expected to explode in and around Kansas City.

2.  Bring Big Business to Kansas City
Although Google Fiber is expected to bring in a plethora of new ideas, the initiative is also predicted to bring big business to Kansas City.  Already-established Kansas City businesses like Cerner and Garmin will flourish with the high-speeds provided by Google Fiber.  We are excited to see what other big businesses will decide to move or open in Kansas City in order to benefit from it as well.

3.  Improve Home Networks
According to CBS, Kansas City is not the only place to receive Google Fiber.  Kansas City is just part of the experiment involving as many as half a million homes to improve ways to build a stronger network.

4.  Create More Jobs
It’s obvious that Google Fiber will create more jobs in and around Kansas City.  But it’s not just the installation and maintenance of the fiber that will require more jobs (In fact, it has been noted that Google will bring in crews the company has used for other infrastructure builds instead.  Read more...).  But Google Fiber may create jobs in the online gaming, telecommunications, healthcare, and app development worlds just to name a few.  Plus, with the creation of more startups in Kansas City, more companies will be needing more assistance.

5.  Put Kansas City on the IT map
A few months ago, The Wall Street Journal recognized Kansas City as an upcoming hub for information technology.  The city is booming with entrepreneurs, small business and technology.  In fact, in a study found by the TechAmerica Foundation, the number of Kansas City tech companies rose by 5% in 2009, trumping the growth rates of Silicon Valley, Boston and Austin.

Top 5 Things Google Fiber Can Do for the World:

1.   Provide Faster Internet
Did you know that Comcast’s current cable service has an average speed of 13Mbps?  This is about 1/20th of the speed that Google Fiber will provide.  Google Fiber will be the fastest Internet speed in the world and therefore, save people a significant amount of time.  Imagine downloading a high-definition, full-length feature film in under 5 minutes, watching a live 3D video of a university lecture, or sending an extremely large document across the world via email in a matter of seconds.  Google Fiber will make it possible.

2.  Improve Education
When I attended Building the Gigabit City last week, much of the event focused on the benefits that the education sector would have by using the Google Fiber network.  The ideas that accumulated were numerous.  Students will have the chance to improve their learning capabilities by taking online classes, tuning into virtual 3D lectures from across the world, or downloading study applications in seconds.  Education is bound to improve with the implementation of Google Fiber—we are anxious to see how.

3.  Generate New Deployment Techniques
Google’s Fiber website states that its goal is to experiment with new ways to help make Internet access better and faster for everyone.  That goal includes the implementation of new deployment techniques within the company.  Google is planning to test new ways to build fiber networks and seeks to inform and support deployments elsewhere.  In addition, Google will share key lessons that they learned throughout the world.

4.  Create Next-Generation Apps
The world has become flooded with apps.  This leaves us thinking "what’s next?"  Google Fiber hopes to help answer that very question.  The world will begin to have access to next-generation apps and developers will have the chance to use ultra high-speeds for their latest creations; from creating bandwidth-intensive “killer apps” and services to other uses we can’t yet imagine.

5.  Transform Business
Because Google Fiber will operate an “open access” network, users will be given the choice of multiple service providers.  That means that any business can transform the way that it operates without having to switch service providers.  This ease-of-use will allow businesses to change the way that they do business and make their inner-workings faster, better and stronger.  Google provides a great example at the top of its Project Overview page: “Imagine sitting in a rural health clinic, streaming three-dimensional medical imaging over the web, and discussing a unique condition with a specialist in New York.”  That’s thinking big...with a gig.
