iKC Answers KC's Question: How Do You Build a Startup in the Midwest?

Kansas City has that "something".  It's hard to put my finger on exactly what that "something" is...but one thing is for sure: it's there.  I was lucky enough to sit in on an iKC panel this morning called How to Build a Start and Stay in the Midwest, where 3 panelists and one moderator talked about what that "something" is and how we can improve upon the entrepreneurial scene, not only in Kansas City, but in the Midwest.

Tom Boozer (UMKC), moderator of the panel, started the session by asking the following question: What makes us different than Boston's tech hub?

And what about Silicon Valley?

What about Austin?

These three cities have truly utilized their growing tech and entrepreneur scenes and have become brands.  Can Kansas City, the Midwest (or in an entrepreneurial scene, Silicon Prairie) do this as well?  Can our geographical location become a brand as well?

Panelists from some of Kansas City's most well-known startups including LiveOn, Front Flip and Farms Tech, seem to think so.

Some of the key take-aways I left this session with:

  • Why do we go to Silicon Valley, Boston and Austin?  Startups go there for the money, the technology and the talent.  Does Kansas City have these 3 characteristics as well?
  • Kansas City's best entrepreneurial trait is its support of entrepreneurs in general.  According to Jason Tatge of Farms Tech, "Entrepreneur organizations in Kansas City get you around other people who are extraordinarily successful in this community.  There is not another city that provides advice like Kansas City does.  The people here are generous and willing to give."
  • Kansas City is a great place to start a new business because of its cost of living.  The cost in other places (like Silicon Valley) is high compared to Kansas City.  Tom Boozer was correct when he said, "there are things you can do here that you can't there."
  • Silicon Valley is known for technology, so that's what you talk about when you're out and about in SF or San Jose.  But in SV, people are more honest about entrepreneurship too.  Here in Kansas City, everyone pretends like everything is perfect.  In the Valley, people talk about the problems that they're having.  Kansas City needs to become more open in saying that we are trying and that we may fail in a few areas.  "There is a beauty in entrepreneurship," said Jonathan Whistman of LiveOn.  "There are companies that are successful and those that fail.  We should be comfortable in telling people that we are struggling.  That happens in Silicon Valley; why can't we do it here and help one another with these problems?"
    • The Front Flip panelist that filled in for Sean Beckner felt the same way: "When I put an investor hat on, I would turn away from someone who says that everything is under control.  You're fooling yourself!"
So what's missing in Kansas City?  According to the panel (and many opinions from the vocal audience):
  • A roadmap for who to seek advice from
  • The willingness to exchange honest information
  • Unstructured, unplanned conversations that tackle certain entrepreneurial problems
  • Entrepreneur-focused classes (i.e. coding, development, etc.) in schools (from elementary to university)
Stay tuned for more updates about what's going on at iKC!

LiveOn (Among Other Startups) Head to St. Louis for InvestMidwest

What do you get when you put 300 attendees, 60 venture capital companies and 44 startup organizations under one roof in St. Louis, Missouri?  You get an entrepreneur's dream; you get InvestMidwest.

InvestMidwest showcases 44 companies representing 10 states across the flyover region in three different industry tracks including life sciences, technology and clean energy/sustainability.  This venture capital conference has helped to generate over $850 million of investments in the past 12 years.

One company in particular is looking forward to the InvestMidwest opportunity.  The startup has been making a splash in the entrepreneurial world with appearances and nominations at SXSW and at during the Think Big Field Trip to Silicon Valley.  The startup, known as LiveOn, is hoping to make an even bigger impact at InvestMidwest today.

"We are looking forward to attending the InvestMidwest Forum as an opportunity to meet potential investors as well as to mingle with other entrepreneurs," said Jonathan Whistman, founder of LiveOn.  "The Midwest continues to be an interesting place to build a business and these types of forums always help with creating a platform to connect like-minded people."

LiveOn hopes to take what they learned during the Think Big Field Trip and implement pitching strategies at the InvestMidwest Forum.

"We just recently returned from a trip to Silicon Valley to participate in a two startup showcases.  One was put on by Silicon Valley Bank and the other by Kansas City's Think Big Partners.  It will be interesting to see the differences in the investment environment from the coast to here in the Midwest," said Whistman.

All startups presenting at InvestMidwest must be located within the center corridor of the United States.  These companies must be seeking $1 million to $20 million in funding and must have revenue projections of $20 million within the first five years.

InvestMidwest will take place on April 4-5, 2012 at the Hilton St. Louis at the Ballpark in St. Louis, Missouri.  To learn more, please visit https://www.investmidwestforum.com/.

10 Midwest Startups Selected for Think Big Showcase in Silicon Valley

Last week, Think Big Partners revealed the 10 startup companies that will participate in the Think Big Showcase, a highly-intensive, multi-day pitchfest for entrepreneurs who live in the Midwest and want to get in front of investors from startup hubs such as Silicon Valley, Boston and New York.

This Spring, Think Big Partners has invited 10 startups to travel to Silicon Valley to participate in the Silicon Valley Bank Showcase and the Think Big Showcase at the end of March.  The startups include:

Audio Anywhere (Bixy): Audio Anywhere aims to increase ad revenues for online media platforms by a factor of 10.  Ads are created through Bixy, the company’s self-service ad platform. Bixy is like Google AdWords for personalized interactive ads. Businesses utilize the Bixy toolkit to create their own ads in less than 5 minutes for as little as $50.

Eyeverify: Eveverify brings to market a software authentication module that will leverage the onboard cameras on mobile devices to take images of the blood vessels in the whites of the eyes to use as a unique biometric identifier, ultimately answering the question: who is holding the phone?

Klink: KlinkMobile enables the transfer of cellular airtime minutes and currency via a proprietary, cloud-based financial transaction platform.

LockerDome: Backed by Square co-founder, Jim McKelvey, LockerDome is one of the hottest sports startups in the country. LockerDome aims to be a person’s sports identity. The bet we've made is that people have 3 big personas in their life: social, professional, and recreational. Facebook covers social. LinkedIn covers professional. LockerDome wants to cover sports/recreational - an area that we believe people are more passionate about than any of the others and the only one of the three areas that completely transcends international borders.

LiveOn: LiveOn aims to be the brand that consumers and businesses trust to preserve their digital legacy.

ABPathfinder: ABPathfinder brings technology to Autism therapy by providing tools for therapists to use in their everyday assessments.
InvenQuery: InvenQuery is a technology platform with mobile application that seamlessly integrates inventory management and point-of-sale, with the ability to administer and publish an e-commerce website. IQ software is agile, scalable and easy to use while maintaining sophisticated reporting mechanisms managers depend on to measure success.
RollSale: RollSale has created a technology that will disrupt the traditional ways in which automotive dealers conduct their wholesale trade. RollSale is a communications platform where dealers are able to connect with other dealers in an environment that mimics the function and usability of common social networks.
SEIN Analytics: SEIN is bringing to market an open cloud application and database for analyzing asset-backed securities (ABS). SEIN is leveraging its proprietary web scraping and data mining technology to rapidly standardize data across all ABS categories. With $2.7 trillion in ABS outstanding, SEIN is directly addressing the pain points of this large market, while taking advantage of new regulatory proposals for increased transparency.
Kauzu: Kauzu is a company that seeks to innovate and empower the U.S. employment industry by providing a dynamic, online environment with unique tools to create meaningful, timely connections. Kauzu is like eHarmony.com meets eBay for the employment industry, which will make job search and hiring timely, active, and satisfying.

Gremln: Gremln.com makes it easy for businesses to easily and effectively market themselves and their products on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, and LinkedIn. Gremln provides comprehensive messages management, success analytics and social media ROI analysis for businesses of every size. Engage, learn, and monitor return with Gremln.com.
Best of luck to the Think Big Showcase startups!

Kansas City Startups Make Appearances at 2012 SXSW: LiveOn, AgLocal and Think Big Partners

There's no doubt about it: Kansas City is on the startup map.  From the Kauffman Foundation to Google Fiber, from Think Big Partners to KCSourceLink, Kansas City entrepreneurship is beginning to make make a name for itself.

And now, Kansas City entrepreneurship is on its way to Austin, Texas for South by Southwest (SXSW) from March 9th-13th.

LiveOn: Finalist for Technical Achievement Award
South by Southwest chose LiveOn among four other Finalists to compete for the Technical Achievement Award, which recognizes projects that are "re-inventing and re-defining the technical parameters of our online experience". This recognition has arrived three months after LiveOn launched its public beta site and four months after LiveOn was named a Global Entrepreneurship Week 50 company of 2011.  The awards event will take place on March 13, 2012 in Austin, Texas and will coincide with the annual South by Southwest Interactive festival.

AgLocal: Competitor in Innovative Web Technologies
AgLocal, an Overland Park startup, was chosen from more than 670 companies as one of the 48 that will participate in the SXSW Accelerator program.  The startup will compete in the Interactive Web Technologies portion of the Accelerator on March 12th-13th in Austin.  AgLocal is a marketplace that connects independent farmers and producers with the demand of local businesses and consumers.

Think Big Partners: StartupBus Participant
Yesterday, one of Think Big's partners, Blake Miller, was chosen to participate on StartupBus, where he will join a number of other entrepreneurial strangers to launch a startup in 72 hours all in the confinement of a bus traveling at 60 miles per hour.  Blake will join StartupBus conductor Jeff "SKI" Kinsey and other entrepreneurs in Las Vegas and will roadtrip to Austin for SXSW. Along the way, Miller will help the team launch a startup and will have the opportunity to visit Rackspace in San Antonio.  (Stay tuned!  Blake will be live blogging from the StartupBus about his experience!)

Best of luck to those participating in SXSW and for those headed down to the event.  Have fun, get inspired and don't forget to Think Big along the way.

LiveOn Joins Eye-Fi, IBM, Google & Tourism New Zealand in Competition for SXSW Technical Achievement Award

WRITTEN BY ALLISON WAY, SENIOR COPYWRITER & CHIEF EDITOR
LiveOn, a site that enables users to capture memories and share with future generations, has joined Eye-Fi, IBM, Google and Tourism New Zealand as a finalist for technical achievement at the South by Southwest Interactive Awards on March 13, 2012, in Austin, Texas.

South by Southwest (also coined as SXSW) Interactive is an event that features five days of presentations from entrepreneurs in emerging technology and spotlights the best new websites, video games and startup ideas. South by Southwest chose LiveOn among four other Finalists to win the Technical Achievement Award, which recognizes projects that are "re-inventing and re-defining the technical parameters of our online experience". This recognition has arrived three months after LiveOn launched its public beta site and four months after LiveOn was named a Global Entrepreneurship Week 50 company of 2011.

"We are honored to be recognized with these other cool technologies," said Ben Kittrell, LiveOn's Director of Development. "But we are the only ones that really change the way people use the Internet and perceive the Internet as a tool. We are trying to personalize the Internet."

LiveOn launched out of Kansas City, Missouri with the help of KC-based startup accelerator and mentorship-based collaborative workspace, Think Big Partners. According to LiveOn staff, the startup had an advantage going into the running for the South by Southwest awards because it has launched and grown out of Kansas City. Kansas City has become a breeding ground for entrepreneurs, startups and investors due to recent announcements such as Google Fiber, Think Big Partners' Gigabit Challenge, and new developments from The Kauffman Foundation. All initiatives are helping to launch and grow startups like LiveOn in and around Silicon Prairie. LiveOn believes that SXSW wanted more Kansas City-based startups in attendance due to the city's growing impact on the entrepreneurial community.

"We are looking forward to exploring more investment opportunities at South by Southwest," said Kittrell. "We want to get the site out there and make meaningful connections."

Linsey Grams, LiveOn's Director of Media and Communications, added, "It will be a good chance to see first-hand where the competition is heading. Staying abreast is half the battle."

The awards event will take place on March 13, 2012 in Austin, Texas and will coincide with the annual South by Southwest Interactive festival. For more information on South by Southwest, visit http://sxsw.com/.

The Story of LiveOn

How the one of the Midwest’s fastest-growing startups killed it by taking risks, engaging the experts and being able to think big

WRITTEN BY ALLISON WAY, SENIOR COPYWRITER & CHIEF EDITOR

In Kansas City, where the aroma of the Rivermarket’s fresh produce and bustling energy of downtown seem to collide, there lies a modest building on the intersection of 7th and Walnut.  From the outside, it doesn’t seem like much.  Standard red brick, numerous hazy windows, and a Thai restaurant sign are the only embellishments on the building’s exterior.  But the inside of the building is a different story.  It houses one of the Midwest’s fastest-growing startup companies—LiveOn.

LiveOn is a Kansas City startup born from the entrepreneurial mind of Jonathan Whistman that has an ambitious vision for capturing, celebrating and sharing life across multiple generations.  In order to do so, LiveOn has created a web application that helps users share their most important moments, while keeping those memories alive and safe for future generations.  In other words, it’s an online time capsule...with a little “oomph.”

If you’ve ever watched your child take his or her first steps and wished you could capture the moment with your camera and show it to them when they’re older, LiveOn can do that.  If you’ve ever wanted to share video from your college graduation with your great-great grandchild, LiveOn can do that.  If you’ve ever wanted to pass down memories with your future children, future grandchildren and future generations, LiveOn can do that.  LiveOn captures, displays and archives all of the most treasured moments in a life and allows them to be shared for generations to come.

A funny thing happened at a funeral
LiveOn was born from a simple thought during a funeral.  Ironic?  Maybe not.  A few years ago, entrepreneur Jonathan Whistman, founder of the LiveOn, was attending a funeral for a family friend’s young son.  Although it was a time of sorrow and remembrance, it was also a time of awakening for Jon.  While attending the ceremony, he realized that the funeral had virtually nothing to do with the kid’s life.  Jon thought to himself, “There has to be a better way to tell a person about your life.  Why can’t we continue to share and enjoy things so that they can live on?”

What if you could rewind your life and watch it back?
Jon continued to ask himself this question as he began to develop the percolating ideas of LiveOn.com.  He knew that he wanted to create a place where memories could connect users with the families and last virtually forever.  But what else could LiveOn do?

Jonathan began raising funds and hiring developers with help from Tony Karrer, former CTO of eHarmony, who was a huge help in LiveOn’s technological architecture and selecting the first Kansas City based developers. The first line of code was written on March 20, 2011 and the company executed a soft launch a few months later on November 1, 2011.

LiveOn experiences growth, change and money
With additional funding, LiveOn is growing very quickly.  Now numbering twelve employees, the company is looking to double its number of employees (more specifically, looking for a systems administrator, mobile developers and front end developers) and is finding new ways to expand its services.

In addition, LiveOn has begun to further develop LiveOn Rewind. When the vision is complete, Rewind will be located in a “clean room” on the second floor of the LiveOn office building.  LiveOn Rewind takes old photos and videos that users send in and digitizes them.  Users can ship videos and photos, watch the LiveOn tech experts scan and digitize them via website, and record their voices over each picture in order to capture the moment accurately.

 LiveOn: Inspired by Apple
When asked what company Jon admires most, he couldn’t help but sigh.

“The answer is obvious,” he said.  “Just look at our offices.”

And it’s true.  In every cubicle sat one hard-working LiveOn employee coding and punching away on a giant Apple screen.  LiveOn’s simplicity, creativity and consumer-awareness truly does have an Apple-esque essence.  But what other companies does the startup inspire to emulate?

“It’s the people in certain companies that inspire me most,” says Jon.  “I love looking especially at the 3-4 person companies.  They believe in what they’re doing the most out of anyone.”

From the words of Jonathan Whistman himself
Starting up a successful company like LiveOn is not easy.  Just ask Jonathan Whistman about the business venture.  The funding didn’t just fall into his lap, the employee applications didn’t come pouring in and the business didn’t create itself in a day.  It takes a lot of effort to make a startup work—especially when it comes to believing in the idea.

“The hardest part of starting up LiveOn has been dealing with the mental challenges,” says Jon.  “I am in a new field, I need tech-capable people, there's no guarantee.  In the beginning I constantly asked myself, ‘Will I be able to do this?’  Finally, I just took a chance and did it.”

But many potential entrepreneurs tend to ask the same question to guys like Jon over and over: why did you choose entrepreneurship and how do you know when to start the business?  Jon’s answer is quite straight-forward:

“Why?  I don’t like working for other people!  People often view entrepreneurship as a danger because there’s no job security.  I believe that the secure corporate job is just an illusion of security.  I have learned that in entrepreneurship, I get to know exactly how many days I am away from being broke.  And then I get to actually do something about it.  In the corporate world, I never knew how many days away from broke the company was and therefore, I had no control.”

“Listen to the experts, but in the end, trust your gut”
If Jonathan Whistman has learned one thing from starting up LiveOn.com, it would be to go with his instinct.

“Always listen to the experts,” he says.  “But in the end, trust your gut.  And remember: there is a difference between advice and counsel.  Advice is something you can get from people who haven’t been through entrepreneurship.  Counsel comes from people who have lived through it.  Always seek counsel.”

How does LiveOn Think Big?
When asked how he Thinks Big, Jon replied with the following statement: “I believe anything is possible if people are willing to challenge conventional thinking.  I think people really do create their own destinies.”

LiveOn - Smart Founders Pivot Fast, Early and "Get It!"

I had lunch today with Jonathan Whistman, Founder of LiveOn and serial entrepreneur. Not only is Jonathan a very smart guy and a nice guy, but HE GETS IT.

Getting it as an entrepreneur is an elusive quality and hard to define. But you know it when you see it.
In this case, Jonathan's background of multiple business successes (and some ventures that did not go exactly as planned) have created a certain DNA that breeds startup success. He has learned the art of the pivot.

For the uninitiated, the pivot is the point in every startup company's lifecycle, where you take a step back and fix what is wrong. Or what is not working. Or what isn't right enough. It's rarely about being perfect, but it's always about making your company better. Occasionally it may mean pulling the plug too.

LiveOn, which launches in October, is going to do great. I certainly don't want to let the cat of of the proverbial bag, but go check out the site yourself and you will understand. But with just 30 days out, you might wonder why pivot one last time before launch?

Jonathan took a step back during the private beta launch group, listened to key voices and decided to fine tune a few last elements. It is this disciplined mentality that will serve LiveOn well, and should play an ongoing role in the success after they launch. They make ongoing adjustments based on what they see and hear, and then what they believe. Ultimately, smart capital providers invest in entrepreneurs who adjust to market conditions, but still rely on their plan and execution to get it done consistent with the vision of being profitable.

The pivot is usually an event that occurs more than a few times in most successful startup's life. The ones that fail to pivot are usually the ones that end up in a trash can down the road. Listening to your audience but keeping an eye on your vision is the balancing act good entrepreneurs maintain.

LiveOn, and the entire crew, get it. Soon hopefully you will see what they have achieved. Watch these guys, they will do big things - and probably have a few more pivots in their bag too.
