038 Think Big Radio: Top 10 Biggest Mistakes Entrepreneurs Make

We often learn more from our failures than we do from our successes.  But we don’t want to make too many mistakes, or else our startup may fail.  To warn you of what mistakes to look out for in the startup world, this episode of Think Big Radio, Derek and Allison will give you insight into the top 10 mistakes entrepreneurs make.

LISTEN NOW:

These mistakes include:
  1. Starting a business for the wrong reason:  Don’t start a business just because you’re “bored”.  Start a business because there is a need in the marketplace.
  2. Choosing the wrong partner:  Startups that run with only one founder are more likely to fail than those with two.  Startups that have more than two founders are even more likely to fail.
  3. Not sharing your idea:  When you don’t share your idea, you are not setting yourself up for success.  Find a mentor, accelerator program or coworking space to share your idea with those who are in the same boat.
  4. Avoiding the pivot: Your business needs to pivot (in other words, your idea needs to change and be reworked).  If you never change your original idea, your business cannot grow.
  5. Putting off legal issues:  Address legal issues the moment they happen.  Find a lawyer who specializes in working with entrepreneurs.
  6. Too much overhead:  Don’t pull a “Tom Haverford” at Entertainment 720.  Keep overhead costs low and focus on spending your money to build the business (i.e. product research and development).
  7. Hiring too many employees too early: Wear a lot of hats the first few months (or years) of building your startup.  Hire slowly and carefully.
  8. Lack of goals:  Write your business plan to include both your own individual professional goals and goals for your business.
  9. Too much focus on the product:  Don’t be product-driven, be customer-driven!
  10. Not learning from your mistakes: Entrepreneurs are not perfect.  Remember—if you’re not making mistakes, you’re not pushing yourself hard enough!

bizperc Member Spotlight: IM For Solos

Meet Shea Glenny—Internet marketing strategist and founder of IM For Solos.  Launching her own business happened the way it does for many entrepreneurs out there—with a passion. Shea decided she wanted to help people, but not the way her pre-med degree would suggest. After a few years in the nonprofit workforce, Shea decided to make a major life change.  She wanted to make the life of a small business owner easier after discovering that marketing can add value to people’s lives.

Her company, IM For Solos, does just that.  Formalized a year ago, Shea and a group of hardworking contractors help startups with everything from SEO to web banner advertising.

So why should you put your business in the hands of IM for Solos? This company focuses on business owners who are hands-on. Shea’s goal is to become your trusted advisor.  She’s always available to phone, email, text or Skype her clients and attempts to get to know them like the back of her hand.  Plus, if you live in Kansas, Missouri, Florida, Illinois, Wisconsin, Texas or Nevada, she’ll come meet face-to-face with you for a reduced travel fee (she gets to visit family while you get to meet the brains behind the biz. Win-win!).

Her favorite part of coworking at bizperc? “It’s a great hub for business activity. It’s quiet, you can meet with clients and network and it’s a positive environment. You realize you’re not alone.” Being an entrepreneur can be tough at its worst, but being surrounded by other startups, people who are going through the same problems, really helps Shea stay sane.

Shea Thinks Big when she has a high vantage point or view of an expansive body of water. Physically broadening her perspective, like on the rooftop at bizperc, gives her brain has freedom to come up with a big solution.

KC Coworking Space Gets Major Spring Makeover

It’s Spring: The trees are blooming, the sun is shining, Kansas Citians are coming out of hibernation and Spring cleaning has begun. With the change of the seasons comes new changes at bizperc. We’re shaking things up around here and we’re all smiles about it.

The walls have come down. That’s right, our cube walls have been removed. We are no longer separated from our fellow coworkers. This change opens up a whole new realm of collaboration. Conversations flow more freely, and ideas can be shared and discussed with ease. It’s open, modern, welcoming and frankly...it’s awesome. While this is the most drastic of the changes the others are just as exciting.

Does your office have a virtual juke box? Ours does. Anybody can come up and play DJ with our newest addition, a touchscreen monitor set up with the sole intent of catering to the specific musical needs of our tenants. It’s a small change, but music is extremely important in an office. It sets the tone and mood for the day. Now you can groove to the music of your choice while working away and collaborating like a champ.

As we see more green in nature with Spring in full effect we too have gotten a little greener. We’ve added recycling bins to each floor. We’re all about working hard, having fun, and saving the planet.

Need a break? I bet you do. Need some exercise and a little friendly competition? Of course. bizperc now has ping pong! We’ve opened up the 6th floor and added a ping pong table. Take your mind off the multiple projects you’re working on and challenge one of your fellow coworkers to a quick game. It’s a fun and easy way to relieve stress and have a laugh.

Here at bizperc we like caffeine...a lot. We love it so much that we’ve added a coffee bar! We now have professional equipment and delicious coffee from The Roasterie. We’re practically a full-blown coffee shop. The aroma is enticing and the coffee is spectacular.

These are just a few of many changes to come. We’re excited and inspired. It’s a good time for change and bizperc is booming. Stay tuned for more updates on the activities happening around the office.

My Top 6 Trends in the Coworking Industry

Anyone would jump at the chance to learn something new and meet unique, smart industry people in a cool out-of-town spot. When I discovered the Austin Global Coworking Unconference Conference (GCUC, pronounced “juicy”), I knew this would be one of those moments. And it was more than I could have imagined.

First of all, going to Austin, TX in any vicinity of SXSW is going to be 1) the perfect time to run into "startup celebrities", 2) an educational opportunity to share best practices, and 3) a heck of a good time!

But even though the majority of my Austin experience was beyond amazing, my trip had a rocky start.  It all began with another crazy Kansas City snow storm which delayed my arrival to the conference by two hours. However, starting my day at GCUC during lunchtime wasn't all that bad. GCUC provided a delicious Austin barbecue lunch and by the time I got through the line, I already said hi to Campbell McKellar from Loosecubes and Liz Elam of Link Coworking (the diva behind GCUC). I sat with the Loosecubes crew and finally got to meet the faces of the people I'd been emailing for months. For the next few hours, every person I talked to had something to share that I didn't know before. More on what I learned in a bit.

The unconference/conference was packed with coworking space managers, owners and aspiring founders. But what is an unconference, you ask? GCUC was actually split into a few rooms: three unconference rooms, a conference track and a pop-up coworking space. The unconference was determined by the attendees themselves by selecting a topic, time and room and that's what built the agenda for the day.

The conference track was full of the most commonly known coworking space owners/managers and top industry coworking space service providers. Topics included “How to Design, Build and Grow your Space for Collaboration,” “What to do When you Hit A Bump in the Road,” “Leveraging Technology to Enhance your Space and Community” and “Why You Need to Get in the News (using PR and Social Media to attract the right members)".

The pop-up coworking was for anyone who wanted to catch up on work, try out the modern collaborative furniture by Turnstone or be a part of the Google hangouts. The day concluded with a Tex-Mex after party sponsored by Turnstone.  It ended up being a great opportunity to talk with people in a more casual environment. On Friday, I participated in a coworking space scavenger hunt and then a closing party at Austin’s own Conjunctured.

In my conversations with other managers, thoughts from panel sessions and discussions from the unconference, these are the top six things I learned:

1. Community is one of the most powerful tools to operating a successful space. A sense of belonging does multiple things: members keep each other accountable to be productive, be on good behavior and achieve stellar collaboration. It’s also a great way to recruit new members. As NextSpace says, “Working Alone Sucks!” When people make the switch to being an entrepreneur, one thing they miss the most about the office is having unexpected conversations (sometimes those are the best kind!), eating lunch with coworkers and energy through interaction. A coworking space community brings the best pieces of bringing coworkers to the entrepreneur.

2. The software and technology solutions for coworking spaces is about to dramatically increase. Up until the past few months, the technology tools specific to operating a coworking space have been slim pickings.  Therefore, many spaces build their own on simple solutions like Google Docs. But now, multiple companies are answering this market opening. Desktime, deskwanted, and cobot, to name a few, are in process of building what they think is best for owners and managers (if you want to share your feedback with these companies, do it now and get an almost customized software solution!). Features for software management tools include internal social networks, payment mechanisms, issue reporting, forums, check-in stats, capacity tracking, mobile access and more. Hardware solutions penetrating the coworking world include internet portals for controlling bandwidth and tracking who is using the Internet, key cards/codes for entry, and security systems on building (insurance rates go down!). Aspects of managing a coworking space should soon become simpler with the new developments.

3. There is an increasing trend of collaborative consumption. There has been a societal shift in the comfort level of sharing. Companies like AirBNB and Zip Car, along with coworking spaces, have inspired a change in the industries of travel and work. Renting out your house and office or renting a car by the minute is no longer a radical idea. Instead, it is a unique way to meet new people, save or even make money and lower a footprint on the environment. The market for companies with the “collaborative” nature is on the rise. Therefore, the market for coworking spaces is doubling each year according to deskmag’s recent Global Trends Survey.

4. A coworking space and the people working there can match each other. In the early-adopting markets like San Francisco and New York, there are enough options of coworking spaces now, and some of them even have themes, are industry specific or cater to a stage of entrepreneur. When the “right” liked-minded people collaborate, beneficial relationships can be made. Iris Krivnaugh of NextSpace says, "Don’t stop marketing, even when you’re full." Coworking spaces should continue the effort to attract the right people.  In addition, members should try multiple spaces to see which feels right to them. What makes a space and a member the “right” match? Both need to be specific about what their needs and resources are. In smaller markets, this may not be possible now with the available options, but  keep in mind: the market is growing!

5. There is an unsolved problem for employment benefits for entrepreneurs. The options for health insurance, disability insurance, retirement funds and the like for entrepreneurs and startups are slim to none. Innovation is clearly needed to create options for the growing self-employed industry. Insurance companies need to find new ways to offer benefits packages on an entrepreneur’s budget.

6. The flyover states and the Midwest are hungry for public education on coworking. There is a gap between the coastal and the Midwest coworking spaces. The large, early-adopting cities have markets more willing to try and demand coworking opportunities. Coworking spaces in the less progressive markets have to work harder to reach full capacity because there is an extra hurdle to educate the general public on the benefits. A discussion about a coworking association or alliance was a hot topic at GCUC. There is a desire for the creation of an organization that shares best practices, educates the public and sets industry standards.  At the same time, others are weary of a “corporatization” of an industry built on a unique, non-corporate place to work.

Events like GCUC are where many important conversations happen and hopefully some action towards innovation and growth will positivity impact the (un-hyphenated!) coworking industry. I truly enjoyed meeting other coworking managers, owners and aspiring founders and look forward to collaborating throughout the next year.

Think Big Sponsors the "Juiciest" Event in 2012: GCUC in Austin, Texas

As a leader in Kansas City entrepreneurship, Think Big Partners likes to be at as many startup events as possible; from Big 5 meetings by the Kauffman Foundation, to Social Media Club of Kansas City breakfasts, from Entrepreneurs Unpluggd's first KC event to local startup launch parties.  We love being active in Kansas City, and we couldn't be busier attending all of these entrepreneurial events in the area.

But this year, we're doing things a little different.  We decided to broaden our horizons and make our way down to Austin, Texas as a sponsor for the 2012 Global Coworking Unconference Conference.

Four years ago, Anna Thomas of Loosecubes noticed that Austin needed a coworking conference.  When entrepreneurs and freelancers began flocking to coworking MeetUps, the idea was confirmed.  This year, Liz Elam, producer of GCUC, is planning an all-day event that will give coworking community members an opportunity to engage with one another, share purpose and passion and refresh energy in the process.  GCUC will host two tracks at once: an “unconference” track with peer-to-peer breakouts for seasoned coworking space owners and a more structured conference track for new coworking space owners.

"Coworking is on the cusp of becoming an actual trend," says Liz of the phenomenon.  "Just look at the growth rate of coworking in Deskmag--it's unprecedented!  We cannot build enough coworking spaces to keep up with the demand."

According to Liz, attendees of GCUC will leave the conference with three main things: inspiration, connections and knowledge that they are not alone.

"Entrepreneurs need a community, and coworking spaces provide that," she says.  "You can go to as many networking events as you want, but coworking spaces are where you'll find a support system.  It's crucial for entrepreneurs.  They need someone to believe in them."

Our own meeting planner and manager of bizperc, Sarah Snyder, will be attending GCUC on March 8th and is looking forward to the networking and the potential of bringing her new coworking knowledge to Kansas City.

“We were trying to find a way to connect with coworking spaces from across the country and stumbled upon GCUC,” said Sarah Snyder, meeting planner for Think Big Partners and manager of the bizperc coworking space.  “This was the perfect event for us to attend.  Sponsorship was just another way to support the great things they’re doing.”

According to Deskmag, a coworking magazine, the coworking movement has roughly doubled in size each year since 2006.  This means that GCUC is expecting a packed house at the AT&T Conference Center in the heart of Austin, Texas.  The all-day conference aims to build upon the visions of each community and provide one-of-a-kind opportunities for coworking peers from around the globe.

“I look forward to meeting other coworking space managers, sharing best practices and bringing a fresh perspective of the industry back to Kansas City,” said Snyder.

How Does a Coworking Space Impact an Entrepreneur?

WRITTEN BY ALLISON WAY, SENIOR COPYWRITER & CHIEF EDITOR

These days, it seems like you can cowork anywhere.  Coworking spaces have been popping up across the globe and the movement is only growing stronger.  But when it really comes down to it, do they truly impact entrepreneurs and help startups succeed?  We decided to take a look at bizperc tenant Coty Beasely, who has worked in this Kansas City coworking space for about five months now.

Since joining the bizperc coworking space, Coty has undergone a lot of positive change within his business.  He attributes most of his growing success to the strong networking he has received while working in bizperc.

Since Coty joined bizperc, he has:

  • Effectively continued to grow his design startup, Beasley Creative
  • Increased his connections to other Kansas City businesses
  • Landed a larger pool of clients including Flamin' Ass Salsa, the Nelson Atkins Museum, Taplicious, FindIt Media and Videolabs
  • Went from working on $300 projects at home to working on $5,000-$8,000 projects at bizperc
  • Increased his revenue by 400%
  • Met a business partner (another bizperc tenant) and launched a new startup called Flow which will focus on projects worth $10,000+
  • Grew to the point of moving up to the 5th floor of bizperc where more established businesses cowork
This was all achieved in under 5 months!

Coty is just a small testament to the power of an effective coworking space.  Coworking spaces connect like-minded individuals, they accelerate businesses and they increase the chances of startup success.  So what are you waiting for?  Join a coworking space today and Think Big!

CoActiveIT Grows in Kansas City, Joins bizperc Community

Entrepreneurs are known to make their own schedules.  Many may not start the day until 10:00 AM and work from home in their pajamas.  But that is not the case for a group known as CoActiveIT.

There was quite a bit of hustle and bustle going on in bizperc last Thursday at 8:00AM.  The energy seemed to be coming from the 4th floor meeting room, where CoActiveIT was discussing the busy month ahead.

CoActiveIT is compromised of seasoned consultants covering a broad range of technologies and skill sets.  Working together to provide clients with custom software development services in Kansas City, CoActiveIT serves clients of all sizes on a individual consultant or team basis.

"CoActiveIT is unique because it's made of independent consultants and consulting firms-everyone that is a part of it has their own business," says Doug Bliss, founder of the organization.  "We all benefit as members because we get to work in a team environment and learn from each other.  CoActiveIT helps all of us improve our skills."

Recently, Doug joined the Kansas City coworking community when he became a tenant at bizperc.

"I love this part of town," says Doug of the Crossroads Arts District.  "It's central to where everyone is and it allows me to share resources with others."

CoActiveIt is growing significantly.  What started as a 12-person consulting organization has developed into a 30-member team with a new marketing hire on the way.  This month, CoActiveIT will be setting up its first tradeshow booth in Kansas Cit...and it seems as if they're looking to make quite a splash.

"The camaraderie and formalization of CoActiveIT is great," says Doug.  "I have taken a positive experience and turned it into a money-making venture."

And isn't that what entrepreneurship is all about?

A Typical Day at bizperc

bizperc has been filling up with creative entrepreneurs and innovative ideas fast these past few months. So what does bizperc look like on a typical coworking day?  Why don’t we take a look at Tuesday – just another normal day in this wonderful Kansas City coworking space!

Interested prospective drop-ins took casual tours of bizperc’s many floors throughout the day, while the small conference room was rented out by Snow & Company, a new frozen cocktail bar that is opening in September in the Crossroads District.
While the Think Big Partners team was busy brewing all-you-can-drink coffee for bizperc tenants, Coty Beasley, a bizperc punch-card holder, was busy working on his Beasley Creative projects and interacting with fellow entrepreneurs.
While Nathan Benjamin of PlanetReuse was busy joining the Board of Reuse Alliance (a huge congratulations to our first floor tenant!  Way to go, Nathan!), Josh Coleman of Zaarly stopped by to cowork and interact with the folks at Snow and Company and Branden Connolly of Evenergy Events and Sponsorships.
All the while, Sarah Snyder of Think Big Partners was busy cleaning up after the Women’s Capital Connection event that took place on the 6th floor the night before.
Busy, busy, busy. Just another day at bizperc!

In addition, bizperc has recently added a brand new sound booth on its 5th floor space.  Entrepreneurs now have the opportunity to utilize this sound booth for voice-over capabilities and much, much more.  Just another bizperc perk that the coworking space brings to entrepreneurs, collaborators and visionaries!

bizperc Perk: The Idea Board!

Although many bizperc tenants love the coworking space's free popcorn, legal consultation, and bottomless coffee, these "perks" are not the number one reason that Kansas City entrepreneurs and startups rent out the office space.  The main reason is to network with others and to get ideas percolating.

Which is why bizperc has implemented the "Idea Board", where anybody--not just tenants, but walk-ins, passerbys, and even the FedEx guys--can bring their ideas to life on a simple white board and get input from others.  It is a testament to collaboration.  And that's what bizperc is all about.

So stop by.  Write on the board.  See what other people think.  You never know what amazing idea can blossom from writing it on a simple white board with a black marker!

Grand Opening: bizperc's 5th Floor for Entrepreneurs

Whew.

After a lot of sweat, elbow grease and collaboration, bizperc's 5th floor has been opened for more coworking and collaboration in record time!  The Kansas City coworking space known as bizperc has been expanding since it opened in August of 2010.  Starting out as a one-floor coffeeshop/office hybrid, the coworking space has grown to a 5-floor (plus a rooftop!) startup heaven.

Check out some pictures from the recently-opened 5th floor space.

Welcome to bizperc's 5th floor!

This cubicle with a view could be yours for only $450/month.

The 5th floor was completed with private offices. Two of them are housed by FINDitKC.

White boards cover the walls for inspiration and organization.

An already well-lived-in cubicle on the 5th floor.

Another cubicle that houses a bizperc tenant.

Not a shabby place to take a mid-afternoon break! Corona, anyone?

A conference room section.

A fully-stocked kitchen keeps all entrepreneurs and tenants happy!

Kansas City Coworking Spaces

In a recent study conducted by Deskwanted, it was found that it is cheaper to work at a coworking space than in a coffee shop.  Although prices do vary from city to city, one thing is for sure: coworking is worth it.  Entrepreneurs, startup companies, freelancers and small business owners can greatly benefit from carrying out day-to-day business in coworking spaces.  But where are the coworking spaces in Kansas City?  Do they even exist?
Of course they do.  In fact, Kansas City is the home of three innovative coworking spaces.
bizperc
1800 Baltimore
Kansas City, MO 64108
Bringing a fresh, innovative, and collaborative approach to Kansas City coworking, the bizperc office space was opened in August of 2010 to support entrepreneurs, startup companies and small businesses.  Located in the heart of the thriving and eclectic Crossroads Arts District, bizperc is the home of many startups and established Kansas City businesses.  Powered by Think Big Partners, bizperc provides on-site startup resources (i.e. legal, web design, logo design, accounting, marketing, PR and much more), a productivity center, meeting rooms, event space, free coffee, and a Wi-Fi enabled rooftop garden.  But there’s more to bizperc than meets the eye: the team behind bizperc has strategically built it so that every entrepreneur’s needs are met—from incorporating natural light to providing sound masking capabilities, from handing out a version of 5-Hour Energy to setting up a video/audio suite—bizperc has it all.  For more information or to book a tour, please visit bizperc.com or call 816-842-5244.

OfficePort
208 W. 19th Street (among others)
Kansas City, MO 64108
As one of the first coworking spaces to hit Kansas City, OfficePort (located in the Crossroads Arts District and the heart of the River Market) is best defined as an open, supportive, and affordable workspace for entrepreneurs, freelancers and small businesses.  With an unfinished and techy ambiance, OfficePort is far from the stuffy, traditional and corporate workplace. Housing over 30 successful small businesses among its three locations (the 3rd location is in Chicago), OfficePort is the ideal home for someone who wants to collaborate, cowork and “weave” with others.  To check out OfficePort for yourself, visit officeportnetwork.com or call 816-994-7311 (Crossroads location).

From Mechanic to Entrepreneur: Tony Kimberly of Spotted Koi

With a passion for seeing how things work, Tony is growing his business within bizperc and beyond.
The reason Tony Kimberly became a mechanic is because he loved seeing how things worked.  He loved the entire thinking process—from fixing problems to communicating with customers, from avoiding conflict to executing effectively.  Tony was a problem-solver.
The reason Tony Kimberly became an entrepreneur is also because he loved seeing how things worked.  He enjoyed the thinking process in a much different way, but he used the same techniques.  He fixed problems, he communicated with everyone, and he made sure that problems did not repeat themselves.  Who would have thought that mechanics and entrepreneurs had so much in common?
In February of 2010, Tony launched Spotted Koi with his business partner, Matt Bernier.  Through his collaboration with Matt (the Chief Technical Officer), Tony’s new business brings projects and websites to life in two different ways—through contract development for designers and through partnering with startup ideas.
“Our goal is to get rid of crappy websites, one site at a time,” says Tony.  “I was a mechanic because I loved to see how things work.  Now, with Spotted Koi, I am able to interact with people and further dissect a business.”
Tony Kimberly and Spotted Koi moved into the bizperc coworking space in downtown Kansas City just a few short weeks ago.  Tony utilizes bizperc’s flexible “drop-in” plan and works from inside bizperc by using his punch card.
“bizperc has great networking and it has great coffee!” laughs Tony.  “I wanted to work away from my house.  I tried other coworking spaces.  But after spending time at bizperc, I think I found a good place.  I love getting to know the people here because they are people that care.  Coming here is always the most interesting part of my day.”
According to Tony, one of the hardest parts of entrepreneurship is finding quality help and beneficial business partners.  Luckily, after finding Matt Bernier, Tony also found “J-Me”, Spotted Koi’s Chief Awesomeness Director.  Together, the three entrepreneurs hope to put Spotted Koi on the map.  And a lot of it is happening at bizperc.
“bizperc is getting people together to collaborate,” says Tony.  “bizperc is more than just a place to work—it’s a place that fosters growth and startups in Kansas City.”

bizperc Joins Loosecubes and the Online Workspace Community

Oh, the power of the Internet.  Tweeting has become the new form of marketing.  Facebook has become the best advertising technique.  And LinkedIn has become the new way to find a job.  So what’s next?  It seems as if there are new social media sites popping up left and right.  While some are extremely beneficial, others may be a waste of time.  But the newest site that we utilize proved itself worthy within the first 8 minutes of using it.
I signed up bizperc (our coworking space in downtown Kansas City) on Loosecubes last week.  The Loosecubes online community connects people with workspaces from all around the U.S.  It’s the best way for entrepreneurs, freelancers, and small business owners to find a space to get inspired, do work, and collaborate with others.
At 11:36AM, I registered bizperc on Loosecubes.  At 11:44AM, bizperc received its first reservation request.  It only took 8 minutes to get noticed on Loosecubes.  The message that was sent to us was this:
I'd love to check this out! I've been a big fan of Loosecubes and I had been waiting for a place to open up here in KC. I'm a designer and developer, own my own business, and I'm looking for a nice place to get some work done now and then.
The next day, the potential tenant came in for a tour.  An hour or two later, we were discussing possible opportunities for collaboration with this tenant.
We were shocked at the quick turnaround of Loosecubes.  For a site that launched just a short time ago, the Loosecubes online environment has become popular by entrepreneurs and business owners everywhere.  Loosecubes currently displays 1,349 spaces in 306 cities across the United States.  The company prides itself on providing unconventional workspaces for an unconventional workforce.  This could not align more perfectly with our vision at bizperc.
